When Is My Hive Broodless? How to Find (or Make) the Treatment Window
Broodless is the magic word in varroa management, and it is not marketing. It is the one condition under which every mite in the colony is standing on the outside of a bee at the same time, where a contact treatment can actually reach it.
Al Toufailia and colleagues measured 97% mite kill from a single oxalic acid sublimation on broodless winter colonies. No dose, no product and no amount of repetition gets you that number in a colony full of capped brood. The window is worth finding.
The short version
In most temperate climates the natural broodless period falls somewhere between late November and mid-January, usually a few weeks after the first sustained hard freeze. You do not need to pull frames in the cold to find it — drone eviction, no pollen coming in, and a tight cluster on a warm-ish day are good proxies. If you keep bees where brood never stops, you either run a treatment series across a full brood cycle or you make a window yourself by caging the queen. Whatever you do, wash before and after so you know it worked.
Why the window exists at all
Queens throttle back or stop laying in response to cold, shortening days and the end of forage. Roughly three weeks after she stops, the last brood emerges and the colony is empty of capped cells. That gap can last a few days or a couple of months depending on your latitude and the winter.
A mite has nowhere to hide during that gap. In a brood-right colony a large majority of the mite population is sealed behind wax; broodless, it is all riding on adult bees. The full biology is in varroa mite life cycle: why timing beats dosage.
Roughly when to expect it

These are patterns, not promises. A mild winter shortens or erases the window, and colonies in the same yard do not always stop at the same time.
How to tell without wrecking the cluster
You do not want to be pulling frames at 38°F. Fortunately you rarely need to.
Drone eviction. When you see workers dragging drones out the entrance in autumn, the colony has decided the season is over. Broodlessness usually follows within a few weeks.
Pollen traffic stops. Pollen is brood food. Watch the entrance on a flying day — when the pollen loads disappear and stay gone, egg laying has wound down.
Count three weeks from the first hard freeze. Not an exact rule, but a sound planning assumption. A sustained freeze usually shuts the queen down, and 21 days later the last of the brood has emerged.
Heft and listen. A broodless cluster is tight and quiet. A colony still raising brood is holding the nest warmer and sounds busier when you put an ear to the box.
If you must look, pick the warmest hour of the warmest day available, crack the lid, and look down between the frames at the centre of the cluster. You are looking for capped brood, not eggs. Thirty seconds and close it up. Do not pull the brood nest apart in the cold to satisfy your curiosity.
The sticky-board tell. Slide a board in for 24 hours. A sudden natural mite drop of chewed or damaged mites can indicate hygienic activity, but more usefully, a board under a broodless colony collects mites that have nowhere to retreat to.
If you have no window
Beekeepers on the Gulf Coast, in Florida, in coastal California and across much of the Deep South often have brood in every month. This is a genuinely harder problem and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
The mechanism is the same everywhere: oxalic acid does not penetrate wax cappings, so with brood in the hive a single vaporization only reaches the mites riding on adult bees. The tool is not the problem. The timing is. A single shot into a brood-right colony is asking one treatment to do a job that needs several.
Two workable answers:
Run a proper series. Repeated applications spaced across a full brood cycle catch mites in waves as they emerge from cells. This is more work and it demands discipline, and it only counts if you verify it with a wash afterward.
Or use something that penetrates brood in the fall, and save the vaporizer for the deepest point of winter when the brood nest is at its smallest. Rotating modes of action has the side benefit of slowing resistance — see the varroa mite treatment guide.
Making your own window
You can manufacture a broodless period whenever you want one.
- Cage the queen. Confine her for around 24 days and the colony runs out of capped brood. Treat on the last days of confinement, then release. Effective, and hard on a colony in the middle of a flow.
- Make a split. The queenless half has a natural brood gap while it raises a new queen. Treat it during the gap, when there is nothing capped left.
- Catch a swarm at the right moment. A swarm arrives with no brood at all. One treatment before they draw and cap anything is the cleanest start a colony can get — we wrote that up in treating a swarm with oxalic acid.
- Same with package bees. A package is broodless by definition on day one. Treating package bees with oxalic acid covers the timing.
- Remove the capped brood. Pull capped frames into a separate box or destroy them. Blunt, costly in bees, but it takes the mites with them.
Treating in the cold, without hurting the colony
Vaporizing a winter cluster is low-impact if you do it properly. You are not opening the hive — the wand goes in through the entrance, the entrance gets blocked for the treatment, and the bees stay clustered throughout.
Pick a calm day rather than a bitter one if you can, mostly for your own sake. Seal the entrance and any upper vent for the treatment period, let it sit, then open up. This is where cordless earns its keep. The broodless window is a cold day in December, often the only good day that week, and you are usually doing the whole yard by yourself. Dragging a generator and cord between hives in those conditions is how a treatment plan quietly becomes a treatment intention.
Prove it worked
Slide a sticky board under before you treat and look at it two or three days later. A broodless-window treatment on a colony carrying mites produces a drop you cannot mistake for anything else. If almost nothing falls, either the colony was cleaner than you thought or the treatment did not do its job, and both of those are worth knowing in December rather than in March.
