Formic Pro vs Oxalic Acid Vaporization: Brood Penetration, Queen Risk and When to Use Each
Formic Pro and oxalic acid vaporization are the two organic-acid varroa treatments most US beekeepers end up choosing between, and the comparison is genuinely lopsided in both directions. Formic acid does the one thing oxalic acid cannot. Oxalic acid avoids the two problems formic acid is famous for.
The short version
Formic Pro penetrates capped brood, which makes it a real option for a brood-right colony in late summer, and its label permits use with honey supers on. The costs are a daytime-high temperature window of roughly 50–85°F and a documented risk of queen loss — it is on the label, and it climbs with heat. Oxalic acid vaporization has no temperature ceiling, no queen risk and no residue in wax, and it delivers around 97% mite kill in a broodless colony. It cannot reach a mite under a capping. Use formic when you need to hit brood, oxalic when the colony is broodless, and never mistake one for the other.

What Formic Pro does that nothing else organic can
Formic acid vapor is small enough and volatile enough to pass through wax cappings. Mites reproducing on a pupa inside a sealed cell are killed in place. That is the entire reason the product exists, and it is a real capability that oxalic acid, hop acids and thymol do not share.
For a colony with a high count in August — the month that decides whether your winter bees are raised damaged — that matters. A treatment that reaches under the cappings can knock a brood-right colony down in one round, where oxalic acid needs either a series spaced across the brood cycle or a broodless window to do the same job.
Its label also permits use with honey supers in place, which for a beekeeper who finds a mite problem in the middle of a flow is a genuine advantage.
What it costs you: the queen
Formic acid is hard on bees, and hardest on the queen. Queen loss during and shortly after treatment is a known, documented risk, and it climbs with temperature. The label itself warns of it, and field trials regularly report a share of treated colonies going queenless in the weeks after application.
That is the trade. You reach the brood, and you accept a meaningful chance of requeening. In a season where queens are available and the colony is strong it may be a trade worth making. In October with no queens to be had, it is a different calculation.
What it costs you: the thermometer
Formic Pro needs daytime highs inside a fairly narrow band. Too cold and the strips do not release enough acid to work. Too hot and they release too much, and you get brood damage, absconding and dead queens.
Late summer, when the count is highest and the treatment is most needed, is also when the Deep South is well above that ceiling. Beekeepers there end up waiting for a cool spell that may not arrive in time, which is a structural problem with the product in exactly the region where brood-penetrating treatment matters most.
Oxalic acid vaporization has no upper temperature limit worth worrying about and works fine at freezing. That is not a small thing. The broodless window falls in December.
Where oxalic acid wins outright
In a broodless colony, nothing else comes close. Al Toufailia and colleagues measured 97% mite kill from one 2.25 g sublimation on broodless winter colonies. That is not an efficacy figure formic acid, or anything else, produces in the field.
It costs pennies per application once you own the tool. It goes in through the entrance in a couple of minutes with the lid on and the cluster undisturbed. It does not stress the queen. It leaves nothing in the wax. And after decades of use there is no documented varroa resistance to it — there is no receptor to mutate, just chemical damage on contact.
What it will not do is reach a mite under a capping, and the majority of mites in a brood-right colony are under cappings. Treating a colony full of brood with a single vaporization and calling it done is the single most common way this product gets blamed for a beekeeper’s timing.
The sensible way to use both
- Count in August. If you are over threshold and the colony is full of brood, you need something that penetrates. Formic Pro is the organic option, provided the weather cooperates.
- Watch the forecast, not the calendar. Put Formic Pro in when the next two weeks of daytime highs sit inside the label window. If they do not, do not gamble the queen.
- Have a queen plan. If you use formic, assume some colonies will need requeening and know where the queens are coming from before you treat.
- Then own the broodless window. One oxalic acid vaporization in December or January reaches every mite in the hive. It is the cheapest, cleanest and most effective treatment on the calendar. When is my hive broodless covers finding it.
- Verify both. Wash or sticky-board after each treatment. Formic that went in during a cold snap may not have worked. Oxalic on a colony that still had brood may not have either.
- Rotate. Neither has documented resistance, but alternating modes of action is cheap insurance against ever finding out.
Where we land
If you keep bees with a real broodless winter, oxalic acid vaporization can carry most of your year and you may reach for formic rarely or never. If you keep bees where brood runs through autumn, formic acid is the organic tool that reaches the problem, and oxalic acid becomes the partner that cleans up in the coldest stretch when the brood nest is smallest.
They are not competing for the same job. The beekeeper who understands that stops asking which one is better and starts asking which one the colony needs this month.
