Small Hive Beetle: Identification, Life Cycle, Traps, and Why Strong Colonies Don't Get Slimed

Small hive beetles (Aethina tumida) have been in the US since 1996, and in most of the South and Mid-Atlantic nearly every hive has a few. A few is fine. A hive dripping with fermented honey, larvae crawling across the comb and bees absconding is not. The difference between those two hives is almost never the number of beetles that flew in. It is how strong the colony was when they arrived.

The short version

Beetles do real damage only in weak, stressed or overspaced colonies. Keep the bee-to-comb ratio tight, run oil traps between frames, keep the honey house clean, and above all keep mite loads low, because a varroa-stressed colony is the one that gets slimed. What Small Hive Beetles Look Like

Adults are 3–6 mm long, oval, dark brown to black, with distinctive clubbed antennae. They scuttle away from light and hide in corners, under the inner cover and in cracks. Watch the top bars when you crack the lid; they run.

Larvae are whitish grubs up to about 10 mm with rows of small spines along the back and three pairs of legs near the head. Unlike wax moth larvae they spin no webbing. If you see grubs plus silk, it's wax moths; grubs plus slime, it's beetles.


The Life Cycle

What a "Slimeout" Is

Beetle larvae carry a yeast, Kodamaea ohmeri, in their droppings. It ferments honey and pollen into a shiny, slimy, foul-smelling mess that runs out of the cells and across the comb. Once a colony is slimed the bees usually abscond, the honey is ruined, and the frames need to be frozen and scraped or thrown out. A slimeout is the end of the story, not the beginning; the colony was already too weak to police the beetles days or weeks earlier.


Why Weak Colonies Get Beetles

Every extension service says the same thing: small hive beetles do not cause damage in strong, healthy colonies. Bees corral adult beetles into "jails" of propolis and remove eggs and larvae. Damage starts when there aren't enough bees to do it. The risk factors are a colony with too much space per bee, a queenless or dwindling colony, a shaded damp apiary, pollen patties left in a weak hive, and colonies stressed by other pests and diseases. UF/IFAS puts it plainly: colonies hosting other diseases and pests are more likely to suffer beetle damage than healthy ones.

In practice, the number one "other pest" is varroa. A colony losing bees to deformed wing virus shrinks below the bee-to-comb ratio that keeps beetles in check. Keep mites low and beetles rarely get their chance.


Control That Works

  1. Keep colonies strong and tight. Match box count to bee count. Combine or requeen weak colonies. Reduce entrances on small colonies.
  2. Trap adults. Between-frame oil traps (Beetle Blaster, Beetle Jail and similar) filled with mineral or vegetable oil, and frame-style Hood traps with cider vinegar as bait. Beetles enter, bees can't. Check and refill on every inspection.
  3. Manage the yard. Full sun, dry ground, and space between hives. Beetles pupate in moist, sandy soil right in front of the entrance.
  4. Honey house discipline. Extract supers within a day or two; don't leave wet supers, cappings or comb scraps sitting. Holding relative humidity near 50% stops beetle eggs from hatching.
  5. Chemicals last, if ever. Permethrin soil drenches (GardStar) and coumaphos strips (CheckMite+) are registered, but both are highly toxic to bees and several extension services no longer recommend them. Traps plus strong colonies solve almost every case.
  6. Keep mites down. A mite wash four times a year and oxalic acid vaporization on the count. The dosage and schedule guide has the numbers.

Beetle Myths

  • "I saw five beetles, my hive is doomed." Nearly every Southern hive has some. Watch the colony strength, not the beetle count.
  • "Traps alone will fix it." Traps thin the adults. Colony strength is what stops reproduction.
  • "Drench the soil every year." It is bee-toxic, and rarely needed if the colony is strong.
