Varroa-Resistant Bees: Can Genetics Replace Treatment?
Partly, in some places, for some beekeepers. That is a less satisfying answer than either side of this argument usually gives, and it is the one the evidence supports.
Resistant stock is not marketing. The traits are real, they are measurable in a laboratory, and you can buy queens carrying them. What they cannot do is change the fact that your bees fly two miles in every direction and come home with whatever they find.
The short version
Varroa Sensitive Hygiene, mite biting and reduced mite reproduction are genuine heritable traits that measurably lower mite growth. Buying a resistant queen does not make a colony resistant, because she mates in the open with whatever drones are flying and the trait dilutes fast. Resistance also does nothing about reinvasion from a collapsing colony down the road. Resistant stock plus monitoring plus one well-timed intervention beats any of the three alone.
What resistance actually is
There is no single mite-proof gene. What breeders select for is a handful of separate behaviours and physiological quirks that each shave something off the mite population’s growth rate.

Note that the first three are all attacks on mite reproduction, not on adult mites. That is the strategic difference between genetics and a treatment. A vaporizer kills the mites that are here now. Resistant bees slow how fast the next generation arrives.
What you can actually buy
Several lines with documented resistance traits are commercially available in the US. Pol-line, developed from USDA-ARS work on VSH, was bred specifically for commercial-scale performance. Russian stock carries a suite of resistance behaviours from its Primorsky origins. The Purdue mite-biting line selects hard for grooming. Saskatraz and various regional survivor lines sit alongside them.
They are not equivalent and they are not all suited to every operation. Some trade honey production or temperament for mite tolerance. Talk to the breeder about what their line was actually selected under, because a line bred in Louisiana has not been tested against a Minnesota winter.
The problem nobody mentions when they sell you the queen
A queen mates with fifteen or twenty drones, once, on the wing, with whoever shows up. Unless you are instrumentally inseminating or running an isolated mating yard, roughly half the genetics in your resistant colony’s workers came from the drone population of every apiary within a few miles of you.
So the purchased queen may be strongly VSH and her daughters may be considerably less so. Requeen from her and the dilution compounds. This is the single most common reason a beekeeper tries resistant stock, sees a good first year, and concludes by year three that it does not work. The stock worked. The mating did not.
If you want the traits to persist you need either controlled mating, or enough of your own drone-producing colonies in the area to shift the local drone pool, or a willingness to buy fresh queens regularly. All three are real options. None of them is free.
And resistance is not a wall
Resistant colonies still get mites. The trait lowers the growth rate; it does not set it to zero. In a low-pressure area that can be enough for the colony to stay under threshold all season. In a high-pressure area, or in a bad autumn, a slower climb is still a climb.
Reinvasion is indifferent to your genetics. When a colony within flight range collapses under a heavy mite load, its bees drift and get robbed, and the mites come home with your foragers. Your VSH stock will work on those mites when they try to reproduce, but they arrive as adults, and enough of them arriving at once in September will outpace any hygienic behaviour.
This is why beekeepers in isolated locations report far better treatment-free results than beekeepers in suburban neighbourhoods with three other hobbyists on the block. It is not that their bees are better.
How to tell whether it is working for you
Count. This is the whole answer.
Resistant stock is a hypothesis about your apiary, and a mite wash is how you test it. Wash in late July or August, wash again in September, and write the numbers down next to the queen’s line and the colony’s number. After two seasons you will know which of your queens are producing colonies that hold their counts and which are not, and that is a real breeding program instead of a hope.
You will also catch the year when reinvasion swamps a colony that had been doing beautifully, which is the year the genetics need help rather than a eulogy. How to do a mite wash takes five minutes.
Where treatment fits alongside genetics
- Treat the colony, record the failure. Rescuing a colony that crossed threshold keeps the bees alive. Writing down that it needed rescuing keeps your selection honest. Do both.
- Use the broodless window. One oxalic acid vaporization when the colony has no capped brood exposes every mite in the hive at once. It is an intervention measured in minutes per year, and it does not undo your breeding work.
- Do not rotate synthetics through resistant stock. Amitraz breeds mite resistance fast — a 2026 Auburn trial saw the resistant genotype climb from 39% to 71% across one 42-day Apivar treatment. Oxalic acid has no documented varroa resistance after decades of use.
- Remember what genetics cannot reach. VSH acts on mites trying to reproduce under a capping. It does nothing about the adults that just flew in. Those are exactly the mites a broodless-window vaporization kills.
- Give it more than one season. Mite population growth is exponential and noisy. One good year proves very little, and so does one bad one.
The honest bottom line
Genetics is the only approach on the table that could eventually make treatment unnecessary, and that is a real reason to invest in it. It is also slow, diluted by open mating, and defenceless against your neighbours. Treating is fast, reliable and does nothing to improve your bees.
The beekeepers getting the best results we see are doing both: buying or breeding the best stock they can get, counting religiously, and intervening once or twice a year at the broodless window when the count says to. Nobody has to choose a side here.
